CIBA Vision's Roadblock: Reaching and Informing Employees

CIBA VisionRecently, CIBA Vision planned an opinion survey to assess employee satisfaction. One challenge was how to inspire strong participation throughout all job classifications. To complicate the issue, the hourly employees did not have access to e-mail. Prior to utilizing Inquisite Professional Services, the past surveys were administered via both web and paper based questionnaires in order to accommodate all employees.

Another challenge was to distribute reports of the data in a format that was immediately useful to local as well as executive management. CIBA Vision needed a way to share the results of 40 survey questions while comparing them across 20 business units and locations.

Inquisite Professional Services Helps CIBA Vision Increase Response Rates

Inquisite Professional Services designed a sampling methodology that allowed the entire survey to be conducted on the Internet. Employees without e-mail were given the option to take the survey at kiosks. Inquisite provided lists of randomized access codes to each site; similar to a voting system. Respondents chose a code that was printed on a tear-off label and utilized it at the kiosk. This process assured employees that their responses would be anonymous in addition to limiting each employee to taking the survey once.

The study yielded an 85% response rate, compared with response rates of 50%-60% in previous years. This increase is attributed to Inquisite Services creating the kiosk and access code process which enabled the hourly associates without email to participate.

Inquisite's solution provided innovations beyond the traditional blend of presentation graphics and statistical tables for reporting. Dynamic reports included customized Excel pivot tables, allowing reviewers to drill down by any demographic and create cross-tabulations on demand. In addition, local managers received "traffic lighting" reports that showed at a glance whether their units' scores on each assessment were significantly higher (green), below (yellow), or far below (red) the company-wide average.
